About Alzheimers And Old people

by Frank Vanderlugt

Alzheimer is a disease that causes dementia among old people. According to a research, about ten percent of Americans who have reached the age of sixty five and at least half of these people who have reached the age of eighty five, suffer from Alzheimers. It is surprising but true that about more than four million Americans presently suffer from this disease and the unfortunate fact is that this number is expected to r

ise in the coming years.

In the United States, Alzheimers is considered to be the third most expensive disease to treat and it costs somewhere around hundred billion dollars on a yearly basis. This disease affects the memory of a person and also brings out a number of changes in brain function in turn, result in altered personality, difficulty in speaking and affected gait.

The disease is not unable. The early damage occurs in the basal forebrain, entorhinal and hippocampus. The actual cause of this disease has not yet been fully discovered. When this disease is there for a long time inside the body, it tends to destroy the large area of the brain. Hence, the victim is left with very little awareness.

With the further advancement of this disease, the patient becomes unable to even feed themselves. Alzheimer is a fatal disease.

The earliest stages of Alzheimers is indicated by slow paced memory loss. It tends to increase as the time passes. Most people suffering from this disease find it really hard to remember the day or month. They tend to lose items more frequently. In some unfortunate cases, victims are not even able to recognize their friends and family members. However, the victim is able to recognize old friends and family members.

As the disease progresses, the victim exhibits the signs of erratic behavior. Patients usually become paranoid, get angry easily and start overreacting to minor things. They also suffer from hallucinations and become violent easily. Victims get easily confused and frightened.

All these behaviors are common in people who were shy, passive and timid prior to developing this disease. There are some cases where the victim in his or her middle stage of the disease would require help while dressing and performing hygiene routines. The ability to speak loudly, read and write are also affected badly.

As the disease progresses, the older memories of the individual also tends to get diminished. All the family members and friends suddenly become strangers. They won't be able to speak or walk. This results in tremendous weight loss. Ultimately, the victim dies due to the brain deterioration.

Currently, there is no cure for this disease. However, some medications claim to retard the progression of this disease. The medical science is optimistic about the research of the medicines and treatment of this disease. There are results that suggest that a regular exercise routine and proper diet will help preventing the disease from occurring. As the wise have always prevention is better than cure.
