Choosing the right Acne Treatment
by Steve Taylor
There are many types of acne treatments available to the consumer these days for treating mild to moderate amount of acne. As such, it can often be difficult or overwhelming to say the least to pick the treatment which is right for you. In this article I will only be talking about non-prescription acne treatments readily available over the counter for you to purchase and what you should look for in those treatment
s. From my personal experience, I can tell you that there are two types of acne treatments which are most popular and affordable. First, there are acne treatments which are solely comprised of herbal ingredients and second there are those which are comprised of agents such as Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl peroxide. Most products you find at the local drug store are comprised of one of these agents.
Herbal acne treatments often come in the form of pills to be taken daily. They are usually formulated from a proprietary blend of herbs and roots including Gardenia, Houttuynia, leaf mustard and many others. Many of the ingredients found in herbal acne treatments have anti-inflammatory properties and help to restore internal imbalances resulting from factors such as hormonal changes, stress, mental tension, and of course improper diet.
Treatments containing agent such as salicylic acid and Benzoyl peroxide on the other hand are designed to treat acne from the outside. They are most notable for their skin exfoliating properties. Meaning they help shed dead skin cells so that the cells do not clog up the skin pores which could lead to more acne lesions. From my experience and talking with others, I've concluded that salicylic based treatments are much better for sensitive skin types because it seems to be much gentler than benzoyl peroxide and tends to cause less redness around the lesions.
Both of these treatments are available in consumer grade flavors, having 2.5% -5% concentrations. Concentrations of 5%, 10% and up to 20% can be acquired with a written prescription from your doctor. However for most cases of mild to moderate acne, the consumer grade is sufficient. So, Whether you are shopping for an acne treatment online or offline, these are some of the points to keep in mind.
