Dali Meets Disney In Destino
In 1946, Salvador Dali and Walt Disney collaborated to create a short animated film called Destino. Though shelved before it was animated, this cutting edge piece was recently revived and finished 57 years later by Roy Disney, using the storyboards that Dali himself created. It is richly laden with outlandish, surrealistic imagery that, according to the curator of the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation, is "the perfect combination of Dali and Disney." It was nominated for an Academy Award last year after being shown at the Cannes Film Festival.Destino will be available to the public at Animazing Gallery from October 14th -16th as part of a major Disney exhibition open through November 14th. Selected fine art graphics recreated from Dali's original storyboards, including three new releases, and some of his original work will be on exhibit. A collection of vintage Disney animation art including the historically significant drawings from Disney's "Golden Years" of the 1920's will also be on display. These images are being shown to the public for the very first time, as the collection of nearly 120 pieces was acquired from the estate of Les Clark, one of Disney's famed "Nine Old Men." The paintings of renowned Disney artists, Harrison and Peter Ellenshaw will also be featured in the gallery.Before the opening reception, Harrison Ellenshaw will paint a scene from Mary Poppins from 12-6pm. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, October 14th 6-9pm at Animazing
Gallery, located at 461 Broome Street, between Greene & Mercer. Destino will be aired every half hour during the opening on Thursday and will be shown at 11am to 7pm Friday & Saturday. Until recently, the paintings had been forgotten in the Disney archives, but limited edition prints have now been issued. In 2002 Harrison Ellenshaw began to carry on his father's legacy by collaborating with him on canvas. Harrison Ellenshaw will talk about the original paintings on display inspired by Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan. He will hand-embellish all of his limited edition graphics in the gallery. Animazing Gallery features the finest collection of vintage and contemporary animation art from all major studios including: Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, Nickelodeon, Fox and Cartoon Network.
