Can Atopic Dermatitis be controlled?

by Brandon McVey

First off, the word Atopic refers to a disease that is hereditary and Dermatitis literally means 'inflammation of the skin'. Parents that suffer from hay fever and asthma are prime candidates to have this passed down to there off spring. The fact that mom and or dad suffered from these common allergies shows the beginning of weakened immune system in the blood line. Years of treating the symptoms and not tackling the

core root of the problem can guarantee generations of ill children.

Eczema is a general term for skin inflammations. Atopic Dermatitis is the most common of all eczemas. Even sometimes just called Atopic Eczema, will most often affect infants and the young. Some children will outgrow it as there immune system strengthens. Still in these cases, the skin will always be dry and subject to outbreaks never really having it clear up. Brought on by synthetic fibers, some soaps, detergents, perfumes and cosmetics. Harsh chemicals like chlorine and solvents. Dust, sand and cigarette smoke. Even stress has been known to trigger it.

Each child is effected differently by Atopic Dermatitis. both in severity of symptoms and the initial onset. . In infants, atopic dermatitis usually begins around 8 to 12 weeks of age. It may first appear as a rash around the face, in turn progressing into red, scaling, oozing skin. Infection may set in. Once the child starts crawling, knees and elbows may also be affected. An infant with atopic dermatitis can become restless and irritable because of the discomfort. Even though infants improve around 18 months of age, they still have a greater risk for hand eczema later in life.

How common is Atopic dermatitis? It is estimated that 15 million people in the US show signs of this disease. 10 out of 100 infants will exhibit symptoms of Atopic dermatitis... Then 6 of those 10 will continue a life long journey battling ever - reoccurring outbreaks. Of those that end up with Atopic dermatitis, 90% of those will develop there symptoms before age 5.

Being that it is unclear what causes Atopic Dermatitis, It is agreed that it is hereditary and stems from a weakened immune system. When treating this form of eczema, doctors have 3 courses of action that they need to take. Healing the skin; preventing flares; and treating symptoms when they do occur. Caring for the skin is easy enough... short warm baths, keep the soap as fragrance and chemical free as possible, allow the body to air dry and apply lubricants as soon as possible.

New drugs being used are Tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel) ointments. These are powerful topical medicated creams. These "immune modulators" were first used internally to help patients with kidney and liver transplants. They helped the body accept the new organs they received. When these are used externally to treat skin conditions they do not weaken or change the body's immune system. And unlike topical steroids, these new medications won't cause superficial blood vessels to break.

Though all this is good for the doctors and pharmaceutical companies. The bottom line is that to get rid of Atopic dermatitis, one should rebuild the immune system and allow the body to correct it's self. Starting off with amino 3 acids, natural tonics and cleansing all the toxins that have been stored in out bodies over the years. Though not conventional, there is a better way to rid yourself of this form of eczema, and most other common allergies.
