A little Fountain History
by Lori Smith
The first tropical gardens and concrete water fountains were thought to be in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia but they were designed for medicinal purposes rather than for ornamental purposes. Never the less, the Egyptians certainly loved their public concrete water fountains. These concrete water fountains were also used in their tropical gardens.
Fountains come in all shapes and sizes, their waters variously displayed, from a s
light trickle to a cascading flow to a gushing geyser. Sometimes they are specifically designed and installed to mitigate noise. Fountains also have been designed to use harvested storm water runoff. Known for their relaxing and healing powers, water fountains add the soothing sounds of water to any space, while adding a visually stunning focal piece. An indoor waterfall fountain will provide you with soothing relief from the troubles of your external environment.
In modern fountains the traditional gravitational pressure from an unseen reservoir at a higher level is not always practical. In many circumstances fountains obtain their water from a closed, recirculating system that must still be filled at the start from the local water supply system and also topped up through its life to offset the effects of evaporation.
A garden fountain not only helps create a relaxing environment, it can be an attractive visual centerpiece of your garden's design.
