Haemorrhoids - Just A Pain In The Behind?

Haemorrhoids (hemorrhoids or piles) are enlarged and inflamed veins in the lower rectum and anus, which sometimes occur outside the anus. Those outside the anus can be seen and are called external haemorrhoids. Those inside the rectum cannot be seen and are called (internal haemorrhoids). Haemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. Haemorrhoids are an especially common disorder and often clear up by thems

elves or with minimal treatment. Haemorrhoids are like varicose veins in your bottom!

What causes haemorrhoids?

The commonest cause is constipation and straining. Pregnancy often causes haemorrhoids due to high abdominal pressure but for most women the problem goes once their baby is born. Being overweight may also cause haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening.

Symptoms

Symptoms of haemorrhoids includes anal itching, bleeding during bowel movements, often bright red on the paper or outside of the stool or in the toilet bowl and pain during and after bowel movements. External haemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This is a thrombosed haemorrhoid. Not all people with haemorrhoids have symptoms.

Many problems round the bottom cause itching, pain and bleeding so it s important you see a doctor if you re worried. Symptoms often go away within a few days.

Treatment

Treatment for this problem consists of two important parts: (1) what you can do, and (2) what your doctor or nurse can do.

What you can do

1. Take daily warm baths to keep the area clean and less painful
2. Apply haemorrhoid cream, which you can buy from the chemist or pharmacist.
3. Change your diet to reduce constipation and soften your stools
4. Stop straining to produce a stool

Drink 6-8 glasses of water or juice a day, eat more fruit and vegetables, eat wholegrain bread, pasta, rice and eat more pulses such as baked beans and take regular exercise such as walking or swimming.

If these methods don t relieve symptoms, particularly with internal haemorrhoids you may need a medical procedure.

Medical treatments.

A number of options exist. They include
Rubber band ligation. Basically a rubber band is placed round the haemorrhoid, which cuts of the blood supply and shrinks it down.
Injection therapy. An irritant solution is injected which causes the haemorrhoid to shrink
Haemorrhoidectomy. If symptoms are severe or the piles very large you may need an operation to cut them out. This is not a pleasant experience for the first few post op days.

Prevention is better than cure so if you are prone to piles change your diet, drink more liquid, lose weight and strain less.
