Strong Association Between Sun Exposure And Reduced Risk Of Lymphoma Found

New York - German researchers have found that the risk of malignant lymphomas can be reduced by recreational sun exposure.
According to their report in the International Journal of Cancer, certain types of lymphoma are actually associated more strongly than others with the exposure to the sun, a finding that still must be balanced with the strong association of s
kin cancer to sun exposures. Due to the conflicting results in an investigation of the association of ultraviolet light exposure to lymphoma risk, Dr. Thomas Weihkopf from Johannes-Gutenburg University, Mainz, and colleagues focused on exposing malignant lymphoma to different UV settings, such as outdoor leisure activities, vacations, and sunbed use.
Based on their reports on the study, out of the recruited 710 patients with malignant lymphoma, all individuals who spent more than 1,190 cumulative days in sunny locations had a much lower risk as compared to those who spent only 350 days or less. This showed an inverse proportion from the number of vacations spent in sunny locations to those diagnosed with lymphoma.
However, reports show that high UV exposure during outdoor activities of people up to the age of 15 years can increase risk of T-non-Hodgkin lymphoma and follicular lymphoma.
The findings suggest that there is a possible independent protection for people who sunbed frequently, and for people who vacation at sunny places, against malignant lymphoma in relation to the stimulation of vitamin D production or modulation of T-cell immunology.
