Medication Safety Issues Addressed By Pima Medical Institute Pharmacy Technician Students
The Pharmacy Technician students and instructor at Pima Medical Institute, 370 Printers Parkway in Colorado Springs recently presented a free seminar on Medical Usage Versus Over the Counter Medications to the visitors of Silver Key, a senior citizens center located at 2250 Bott Ave in Colorado Springs.             The seminar is one of the outreach projects PMI hosted in recognition of Medication Safety Week April 1- 7. A second seminar is scheduled for another retirement community later in the month.             "With all the choices and direct advertisements flooding the market regarding both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, it can be very confusing for people to make decisions," said Karen McGrath, campus director for the Colorado Springs career college. "By having these seminars we provide a little insight into the difference between the two, and also encourage individuals to talk to the on-duty Pharmacist if they still have questions or concerns."             The Pharmacy Technician program at Pima Medical Institute is 32 weeks for day classes and 39 weeks for the evening program. The curriculum includes math review; medical terminology;

anatomy/physiology/chemistry; introduction to pharmacy technician duties, introduction to computers; pharmacy math; pharmacology (retail/hospital/generic brand drugs; pharmacy law and ethics; clerical duties; inventory maintenance; over-the-counter products; human behavior/communications; putting the customer first, OSHA/WA/QC/CPR/First Aid; certification review; RXT Computer applications; lab skills and an externship.             PMI is one of the premiere medical career colleges in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training at medical facilities that mirror the working environment they will pursue after graduation.                PMI has been serving students since 1972, with campuses in: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mesa and Tucson, AZ; Chula Vista, CA, Seattle and Renton, WA; Las Vegas, NV; as well as Colorado Springs and Denver.
