Hydroxyzine Information - Drug Interactions

Type of Drug:

Antihistamine and agent to relieve nervousness and anxiety.

How the Hydroxyzine Production Works:

Hydroxyzine decreases anxiety by suppressing activity in the anxiety centers in the brain. Antihistamine (anti-allergy), bronchodilator, analgesic, and antiemetic propert

ies have also been demonstrated.

Uses of The Hydroxyzine:

For short-term (4 months or less) relief of anxiety and tension.

To relieve itching due to allergic conditions (eg, hives, rash, insect bites). For sedation prior to and following surgery.

Injection - To treat hysteria, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, or delirium tremens. To control vomiting and pain (with other drugs) before and after surgery or delivery. To control nausea and vomiting from causes other than pregnancy.

Precautions:

Do not use in the following situations:

Allergy to hydroxyzine or any of its ingredients

Breastfeeding

Pregnancy

Pregnancy: Do not use during pregnancy. The risk of use in a pregnant woman clearly outweighs any possible benefit.

Breastfeeding: It is not known if hydroxyzine appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before you begin breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or planning to take any over- the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements with hydroxyzine. Doses of one or both drugs may need to be modified or a different drug may need to be prescribed. The following drugs and drug classes interact with hydroxyzine.

Alcohol (eg, ethanol)

Antihistamines (eg, diphenhydra mine)

Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital)

Narcotics (eg, morphine)

Side Effects:

Every drug is capable of producing side effects. Many hydroxyzine users experience no, or minor, side effects. The frequency and severity of side effects depend on many factors including dose, duration of therapy, and individual susceptibility. Possible side effects include:

Other: Dry mouth; dizziness; involuntary movements.

Guidelines for Use:

Dosage will be adjusted according to individual patient response to therapy. Use exactly as prescribed.

Shake oral suspension vigorously until product is completely resuspended.

The injection form is only used when tablets, capsules, suspension, or syrup are unable to be taken by the patient.

The injection form will be prepared and administered by your health care provider.

Injection solution should be inspected before use. Injection solution should only be administered intramuscularly (1M).

The effectiveness of hydroxyzine as an antianxiety agent for more than 4 months has not been assessed by clinical studies. Your doctor will reassess the usefulness of the drug periodically.

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to do so by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, or it is necessary to establish a new dosage schedule, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

May cause drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity.

Avoid alcohol or other depressant drugs (eg, narcotics, tranquilizers, antihistamines) while taking hydroxyzine.

Store tablets and capsules at room temperature (59 to 86F). Keep tightly closed. Protect from moisture.

Store oral suspension and syrup below 86F. Keep tightly closed. Protect from freezing and light.
