How To Prepare For Pregnancy
By John
As you can imagine as soon as a baby starts to grow inside you, there is no way to take a break from being pregnant until the day of the delivery. It is for this reason that many mothers want to make their bodies as fit and healthy as possible such that they are very prepared for hosting the baby inside them. Below are four ways to prepare yourself for pregnancy:

1. Toxins

The major toxins that you have to be worried about include those from cigarettes or from alcohol, but you should also watch out for medications that you take that have the ability to cross the placenta.

2. Medications

If you take any kind of medication, speak to your medical provider about this and ask if the medication you take is safe during pregnancy. There may be an equivalent of this drug you are taking that is safe to use during pregnancy. On the other side of the coin, there may be no alternative available and you might have to switch treatments from a medication to something else.

3. Folic Acid

Folic acid helps prevent birth defects, specifically spinal defects. Consult with your doctor but every woman who is thinking about having a baby or is in the first trimester of pregnancy should take a daily supplement dose of

400 micrograms and eat a folate rich diet to help reduce her baby's risk birth defects. It should also be noted that you also increases the chance of having a miscarriage if you don't take folic acid. Generally once you are into your second trimester you may stop taking the supplements (although there is no harm in continuing to take them).

3. Lifestyle

A safe environment is the chief concern for every mothers child. If you are someone who has a stressful job that requires you to be on your feet much of the day, or work long hours, then consider taking a maternity leave. Men are also eligible for time off, although this is not as extensive as the time off that a women is given. You might also consider a new, less demanding job such as a sideways move within your own organization or a new job altogether. In any case, if you do change jobs be sure that you do not lose any maternity benefits.

4. Planning

Pregnancy is rarely a calm and tranquil ride. Planning ahead can greatly reduce fatigue and stress levels caused by immediate lifestyle changes. Planning ahead really does pay off.
