Low Sperm Count Treatment: Conventional or Herbal Solution
by John T Harrison
Oligospermia aka low sperm count is a medical symptom affecting men and means having less than 20 million spermatozoa per milliliter of ejaculate. For relatively normal sperm count is considered 20 million or more per ml of semen.
Low sperm count is one of the main causes of male infertility. Although it takes only one sperm to fertilize the egg, the odds of a single sperm to reach the egg
are considerably low if the overall sperm count is less than 20 million per milliliter. This is not a rule, just the common case, which means there are exceptions. To conceive a child it is enough at least 60 percent of the spermatozoa to be normally shaped and have good motility. The minimum count of 20 million spermatozoa to conceive a child is not as accurate as one might think. Many men diagnosed with oligospermia have successfully fathered children.
Why do I have a low sperm count - that is the million dollar question in case of oligospermia
Unfortunately nine out of ten doctors will not be able to answer it. They will just diagnose you with idiopathic oligospermia, i.e. cause unknown. The tests that can answer that question are expensive and currently available only in labs conducting researches in that field, which explains why they are being used seldomly to determine the exact causes of that common men's problem.
However, we must admit that this test is a breakthrough for the modern medicine and has enlightened the cause of low sperm count - oligospermia is probably caused by microdeletion on the Y-chromosome. Which most likely proves that it is a genetic disease and as we already know has nothing to do with men's general health, physique, and sexual or diet habits.
There are two type of treatment - conventional and herbal.
Conventional treatment
It takes time and it is not easy. What is more this treatment does not treat the man and his problem alone; it might also involve his wife.
The treatment starts with the sperm survival test - sperm count is assessed by its motility. If there are more than 3 million motile sperm per milliliter, after 24 hours of being kept in special conditions, then the results are promising. If very little or none of the spermatozoa are alive after that period - the results are not good.
There are three types of treatment depending on the different sperm count:
1. Superovulation and intrauterine insemination - recommended when sperm count is just moderately decreased and the initial sperm count was 20 million. This method suggests improving woman's fertility potential. This is the easiest treatment for men. If pregnancy does not ensue after 4 treatment cycles then it is advised to try the other treatments available:
2. IVF (in vitro fertilisation) - recommended when motile sperm count is more than 5 million in the ejaculate. This treatment tests if the sperm can fertilize the egg at first place. The egg and the sperm are incubated outside the woman's womb for about 18 hours. If fertilization takes place for that time the chances for pregnancy are very good. If fertilization does not take place, the next treatment is:
3. ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) - recommended when motile sperm count is less than 5 million or if IVF has failed. A single sperm is injected directly into the egg. The fertilised egg is passed to a special growth medium and left for about 48 hours. ICSI aka microinjection is an advanced treatment that allows all infertile men to have children on their own, no matter how low their sperm count is.
Herbal treatment
It doesn't hurt to try it as it is completely safe - there are not any side effects known. It's much easier and quick compared to conventional treatment, as well as you will see and feel the results in very short period of time. That sounds surprisingly good, but is it really that great?
