More New Disease Breakouts In Horse Racing
The first case was discovered in an Egham farm that is located 10 miles from an animal research site in Pirbright, which was the centre of an outbreak in August. The nearest racecourses such as Kempton, Windsor, Sandown and Ascot have all been declared under zone control and some extreme procedures to prevent spreading, even include the disinfection of vehicles at Kempton after Wednesday s horse racing.
A spokesman from the Ascot racecourse stated that he strongly doubts that the big event that was to last three days in Berkshire will no longer be able to take place after these happenings.
Officials from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) are coordinating with the corresponding government officials to bring in bio-security measures at various racecourses that include wheel washes of incoming horseboxes.
The last recorded outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease dates back to 2001 and concluded in the termination of the pride and joy race meeting known as the Cheltenham Festival which was scheduled to be held in March of that same year.
So far according to the representative for BHA, Will Lambe, there is no need to be alarmed at this point, but preventions are being made to further avoid any type of continuous contamination.
Some actions that will be taken into affect are the disinfecting of mats and sprays for means of transportation incoming and outgoing from the course although the horses are not directly infected by the disease.
Lambe stated that race goers should not be concerned straight away by the actions and that they are strongly observing all progress.
