Symptoms Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The most common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are:

  • Frequent abdominal pain

  • Bloating of your stomach

  • Any pain or discomfort is relieved after a bowel movement

  • A change in the how often you have a bowel movement

  • Your stools come out either lumpy and hard or loose and watery

  • You have an uncontrollable urge for a bowel movement but it is either difficult to pass a stool or the bowel movement isn't finished

  • You notice that you have mucus in your stools

That said, everyone is different and it is therefore possible that you could suffer from all the above symptoms but not be experiencing IBS or you may be affected by only a few of these symptoms but be afflicted with IBS.

Either way, it's important to arrange for an examination with your doctor. Despite the large amount of information available on the internet, the personal experience and the wide variety of tests that your doctor can carry out make this the best option.

IBS can be painful but it isn't actually classed as a disease. It's classed as a functional disorder. In layman's terms, this means your body isn't working as well as it should be.

Around 1 in 5 people suffer from IBS. If you're a woman, you're unfortunately far more likely to be a sufferer - around 4 out of every 5 sufferers are women.

The most number of cases for IBS are seen in people in their teens through to their 40s. So if you're in that age range, female and suffering from most of the symptoms above, it's time to get a checkup.
